Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette wanted by Atletico Madrid if they fail in pursuit of Edinson Cavani

Atletico Madrid are planning an offer to prise Alexandre Lacazette away from Arsenal if they fail to sign Edinson Cavani this month, reports claim.

The LaLiga giants have found the net just 22 times in the league this season and boss Diego Simeone is desperate to land a proven goalscorer to help them mount a title challenge, with rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid five points above Atleti in the table.

Cavani, the Uruguay international, is said to be Simeone’s prime target but Paris Saint-Germain have insisted they will not sell him in January, despite the striker’s contract expiring in the summer.

Therefore, Wanda Metropolitano chiefs have been searching the market for other options and have now pinpointed Lacazette, 28, as a potential alternative, according to Marca.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to the Spanish club in the past and the report suggests Atletico would be willing to offer Thomas Lemar in any potential deal for the striker.

However, the report repeatedly highlights that Lacazette will only be targeted if it becomes clear that they have no chance of signing Cavani.

Lemar, who has also been subject to interest from Chelsea in recent days, has struggled to adapt to life in the Spanish capital since his £51million move from Monaco back in 2018, scoring just 3 goals in 49 LaLiga appearances.

And it is believed the 24-year-old has also been on Jose Mourinho’s radar in recent weeks, but Tottenham would only be interested in a loan deal for the Frenchman.

Lacazette has had a disappointing start to the season at Arsenal, scoring just six goals in all competitions, and he will now be under the spotlight in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s absence.

Aubameyang was sent off for a late tackle on Max Meyer following a VAR review in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend, and will now serve a three-match ban.
