Arsenal transfer news: Dayot Upamecano will NOT join in January as Mikel Arteta only looking at loan deals

New Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta looks unlikely to get any money to spend in the January transfer window.

The Spaniard has made an instant impact at the Emirates, leading his side to a convincing victory over Manchester United on New Year’s Day after an impressive performance against Chelsea in their previous match.

However, he has numerous injury problems, particularly at the back.

Calum Chambers has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Kieran Tierney is still two months away from a return and Hector Bellerin remains sidelined.

The Gunners have been linked with a number of players this month, with RB Leipzig’s £45million-rated Dayot Upamecano hotly tipped for a move to the club.

However, according to Goal, Arsenal have no plans to make any permanent signings this month.

The north London side spent around £140million last summer, bringing in Tierney, Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli.

And the Arsenal hierarchy are said to have ruled out any more spending in January unless something too good to refuse comes up.

Arteta recently admitted he wanted to sign as many as two players in the transfer window.

But he will have to use the loan market to bolster his squad, it seems.

“We need players back from injuries, first of all, to be more solid, more compact,” said Arteta.

“And then we might need to do one or two things if the right players become available, to help us. But at the moment I am more concerned with getting the maximum out of the players available to us.”
