Chelsea pranked their own fans on social media by teasing ‘Three’ new signings, only to unveil a new shirt sponsor.
The Blues are yet to sign anyone this transfer window, despite having their ban lifted, and time is running out with just one week remaining in January.
But amidst the frantic negotiations that are probably going on behind the scenes, Chelsea’s social media team still found time for a bit of fun…
The club tweeted: “You wait 24 days for a signing and then Three come along at once!”
Chelsea were, in fact, revealing their new shirt sponsor, with Three set to take over from Yokohama Tyres next season.
It brings to an end five years of the Japanese company’s name fronting the Chelsea shirt as part of a £200million deal signed back in 2015.
“It’s a big deal for us to link up with Three,” Blues boss Frank Lampard said.
“They’re leaders in their field, a great brand. I’m certainly very happy with it, and as a club we’re very happy with it. They’re leaders in 5G so it is very exciting for us as a club to be involved with them going forward.
“We look forward to it.”
As far as transfers go, Chelsea remain in the hunt for a striker amid links to Edinson Cavani and a possible injury lay-off for Tammy Abraham.
Lampard added: “I think the impetus to bring in a striker or players potentially that can get on the end of these chances we’re creating is there, we have to be honest.
“When you’re creating 20 chances a game and not scoring enough goals that can be crucial. I don’t think it absolutely changes it but Tammy has been our main source of goals, so yes, it’s very relevant.
“I think there’s choice (in the transfer market), but it’s not the ideal window, history’s proven that.
“I think it’s about trying to get the choice right of the player we can bring in considering what’s available.
“The club know, and the games are showing that, my thoughts on that. So we’ll have to see how that goes between now and the end of the window.”
