‘I hope Liverpool have a 12 point lead in March and fall to pieces’ – Manchester United legend Gary Neville says another title failure would ‘make my year’

Gary Neville told talkSPORT it would ‘make my year’ if Liverpool falter in the Premier League title race for the second year running.

The Manchester United legend revelled in the Reds’ title failure last season, although was still not entirely happy as Manchester City beat Jurgen Klopp’s side to the trophy by just one point.

European champions Liverpool have maintained their impressive form this season to go eight points clear of the table after 14 games, and they have the chance to extend it to 11 in Wednesday’s Merseyside derby against Everton.

It would give them a big lead as the campaign reaches its half-way mark – although that didn’t mean much for them last time as City caught them with an outstanding 14-game winning run to end the season and be crowned winners.

Neville is certainly hoping for a repeat of last season’s Liverpool crash.

However, he begrudgingly admits that doesn’t look likely given their consistency over the last few years.

Asked if he thinks this is Liverpool’s year, Neville told talkSPORT hosts Jim White and Natalie Sawyer: “If they blow it now, it’s going to be one of the best years I’ve had on Sky!

“Honestly, it would be the most incredible experience to watch this unfold and for them have a 12-point lead and then it dissipate before my eyes.

“I actually hope they have a 12-point lead in March and then really late just fall to pieces!

“But I have to say, they’ve shown consistency now for two years, they’ve been playing title-winning football for two years and they’ve amassed points that in any other season would win a title.

“And Man City are well below where they should be.

“Liverpool will have to work hard not to win it now with where they are at. They must think it’s their year.”
