Liverpool fan Callum Smith knows his 2020 Anfield dream could be over this weekend.

Smith defends his WBA super-middleweight title against John Ryder at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on Saturday.

And a win over Ryder will keep ‘Mundo’ on course for a huge fight against a big name – potentially Billy Joe Saunders, Gennadiy Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez – at the home of his beloved football club.

Smith, who is undefeated with 19 knockout victories, said: “This fight is like every other fight in my career, they’ve always been must-win.

“I always wanted to be where I am now so any loss along the way would have derailed those plans.

“Now people are talking about 2020 and the massive names and the thought of Anfield. All of that disappears if I lose to John Ryder.

“It’s the same motivation that I’ve always had. I always want more and I’m always wanting to see what’s next.

“This fight is no different, a win over Ryder opens the door for possible huge fights in 2020. A loss to Ryder and they all disappear and I become a challenger again and I join the queue.

“It’s a must-win fight for me and that’s all I need. As long as I’ve got a world title I’m in a very good position.”

Arsenal supporter Ryder insisted he would ‘take a lot of pleasure’ in ending Smith’s hopes of fighting at Anfield.

He said: “He is the world champion and the city’s big dream of a show at Anfield. He is the front-runner but I’m coming to cause the upset and, if I beat Smith, there will be no Anfield show.

“They might need to find a new headliner.

“I’d take a lot of pleasure in making the first boxing show at the Emirates Stadium. I’d take pleasure in going to Vegas and fighting Canelo.”
